Our truck-mounted units move 400 litres (105 gallons) an hour. The waste water stays outside the building. On carpet we run weighted extraction heads. Those press down on the underpad and draw water a hand wand glides straight over. The difference shows up as one or two fewer drying days.
Water under a floating floor, inside a wall cavity or beneath a tiled subfloor will not evaporate on its own in any useful time. We use floor mat systems and cavity ventilation to draw it out under negative pressure. That is what lets us dry hardwood in place rather than tear it out.
A shop vacuum is not rated for the volume, and it recirculates dirty water. On a Category 2 or 3 loss it sprays whatever sits in that water through the room as fine mist. It is an electrocution risk on a wet floor too. This is the one thing we ask homeowners to stop doing.
